The olympics are violent, capitalism is violent!
Submitted by dan kellar on Mon, 02/15/2010 - 03:31since the CBC has moderated my comment regarding their poor coverage of the Heart Attack 2010 demonstration at the 2010 anti-olympics convergence, and restricted this free speech from the website that the public purse pays for, i decided i would post my comments anyway, and take the opportunity to expand on the ideas.
smashing inanimate objects, such as windows is not violent. no person or other living thing was harmed or killed. the destruction of communities, lives, and ecosystems in the name of a transnational corporate 'sporting' event is violent.

Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop’s Bill 32 passed second reading in the Ontario legislature this afternoon.
It’s a bill that calls for revocation of the Certificate of Approval for Dump Site 41.
Dunlop was supported by his Progressive Conservative colleagues and members of the New Democratic Party – the surprise was that a number of Liberals, including Natural Resources Minister Donna Cansfield went against the party line resulting in a vote of 40 in favour, 11 against.
“I think it was people who were listening to their constituents,” Dunlop said, adding that MPPs have been deluged with emails, letters and calls over the past few weeks.

MIDHURST, Ont. — A long and hard-fought community battle to stop a landfill being built atop a groundwater source culminated Tuesday with all development at the site being permanently discontinued.
Opponents of the so-called Site 41 dump site, about 40 kilometres northwest of Barrie, Ont., fought for years against the landfill, concerned about what it would mean for water quality.
Simcoe county council voted last month to place a one-year moratorium on the site in Tiny Township and its mayor Peggy Breckenridge and lawyer Peter Rosenthal say council voted Tuesday to make that permanent.
Significant victory in court – development continues.

Come on…The Cord
Submitted by dan kellar on Tue, 03/03/2009 - 21:34I thought The Cord was above joining other media sources by giving space to Global Warming Junk Science – then I read Alanna Wallace’s February 4th column “We need to be wary of Global Warming.” Her entire piece, other than being contradictory, was insulting to those that have studied climate change (and are not paid by oil) and to those who have watched more than two documentaries on the issue of the climate crisis.
War Crimes Should Not Be Endorsed in the Imprint
Submitted by dan kellar on Sat, 01/31/2009 - 21:08The decision to publish in the January 23rd edition of the UW paper, the Imprint with the community editorial by Tom Levesque needs to be questioned by those paying for the publication of the student paper – the students. Editors made the conscious decisions to run an article that openly calls for indiscriminate warfare against the civilian population in Gaza. Student fees have helped fund the publication of an article calling for war crimes to be committed.
Stop Police Brutality - Seriously - It's not Cool

Being the Change
Police Suck. I usually avoid such blanket statements, but since I can only think of one exception to the idea (thanks for the drive home Royal Constabulary in St. John’s) I will stand firmly behind it. My recent wave of disgust with the repressive agents of the state was triggered by the brutal murder of Alexandros Grigoropoulos in Greece on December 6th 2008.
Enough of It - Another Police Murder
Submitted by dan kellar on Wed, 01/07/2009 - 16:16The Uprising in Athens was sparked by the murder of a youth Alexandros Grigoropoulos by the police. In solidarity actions around the world, people told the police that enough was enough, no more state sponsored murder. Cops must be held accountable.
On New Years Day 2009 in Hayward California, the police, in cold blood, murdered Oscar Grant.

The Importance of Protest
Submitted by dan kellar on Tue, 10/28/2008 - 12:00I had one of the most empowering days of my life two weekends ago. On Sunday October 12th, the peace group I am involved in (Anti-War Laurier), along with activists from Six Nations, Toronto, Guelph, London, and Hamilton performed a non-violent direct action by blocking the CP Olympic Spirit Train, the corporate propaganda tool which I introduced last week.
