Consumer Challenge

Oh, the supermarket. I don't know what motivates me to enter such establishments, but it is always an eye opener.

So, I'm looking for tomatos....the grocery store I am in offers "organics". I look at the fresh tomatos. First of all, all of the organic tomatoes come in plastic packages!
There are three options. Two state that they are a product of Canada, one says Mexico. I'm looking at the packages, and the "Canadian" tomatoes are certified by the f&@#ing USDA?! Confused, that is a certification I don't trust, and generally try to avoid. What I'm more worried about is how the USDA weasling it's way into Canada's products. Were the tomatoes imported, and packaged in Canada, and somehow they think that constitutes as "Product of Canada"? Or is the SPP doing it's job bringing USA's system accross borders?
Anyways, so I end up with canned tomatoes certified by organic crop producers and processors of Ontario Inc. I even saved some bling. I don't generally buy things in cans....why do I enter grocery stores? At least it was inspiring.

My anecdote introduces what I like to call a consumer challenge. Buying consciously can be difficult. A lot of people shop in grocery stores. A lot of people aren't shopping consciously. I'm ranting to a woman whos buying imported, sprayed produce about the USDA. She may think I'm a little bonkers.
Over the holidays as a conscious concerned citizen take it upon yourself to question consumer habits with consciousness. Leave notes, articles, whatever you can think of that will get people's attention, and get them thinking. It would be nice to have some web links for more info.
Maybe there could even be a scavenger hunt for ethical food one day...just throwing ideas out there.

The world is your playground kiddie-poos, have fun!
